October 2013 | the ReFab Diaries

Ugh... those nasty light fixtures that developers use when they literally refuse to spend more than 25c on lighting. I'm not a fan. Nor do I love the ugly wire planters that come out in the spring ... but at least they get covered up with whatever is planted in them!

But somehow these two things are combined into something I love. It's clever, simple and the color choice is perfect. Complete Cage Light tutorial at Rook No 17.

Really simple idea from the Ambitious Procrastinator ... but effective!  Check out the tutorial and all her other lighting DIYs.

And this?  Click through to see more images and get the full effect. This is such a high-impact refab and I can imagine that the actual light it gives off is really warm. Rock on Cleverly Inspired.

I rarely create holiday-specific posts, but this year I've seen enough awesome halloween "upcycles" that I feel compelled to round them up and share. Like the diction-fairy costume pictured above .... really? Does it get any better??? Good tutorials here and here

I featured this creepy idea a long time ago in a post dedicated to repurposing old umbrellas. I'm bringing it back out again because it remains a great idea!

Love this Frankestein bottle care ... DIY of Crafting a Green World

Not really upcycling ... they're crocheted. And I love them ... so go take a look at more lovely images of them at Cute Cottage Overload

Old grill rack turned spider web? Yes. Simple and easy. Care of Petticoat Junktion

And finally ... some creepy dolls. Because I don't think anything's creepier than creepy doll heads. More at Sweet Pickins Furniture

Christine Marie Davis collects old metal knitting needles and turns them into extraordinary bracelets ... the colors are wonderful! Check out the full collection and visit her blog. where she refers to herself as a "finder, collector, maker, breaker, smasher, basher."

No DIY for working with metal needles, but if you have old plastic ones lying around, they make great bracelets too!

Check out the tutorial (pictured above) care of Time for Tea.  If you're interested in what else you can do with old needles, take a look at this roundup.

As always, I used random.org to pick the winner and it chose entry #375 ... that's Lauren Becker! Lauren, congrats! Expect an email from me later today.  :)

Paper beads (think magazine pages) are easy to make (I made book-page beads a while back) and can have a great visual impact when displayed together ... like this wonderful curtain from Trashy Crafter!  I love the colors :) Click through for the complete DIY.

A while back, I dedicated a whole week to repurposing negatives and film. The actual film ... not the containers.

If you were given a big box of betamax/VHS tapes, what would you do with them? How about these amazing tables?? I love the irony (so to speak) built into the bottom table .... :)  Get all the details at Casa de Colorir. Top table here, bottom table here.
