Valentine upcycle: Book-page treat bags | the ReFab Diaries

Yup - I made a Valentine's Day thing. Mostly because I was inspired by Pillar Box Blue's upcycled map hearts. They're so easy to make and such a great way to repurpose magazines, old book pages and, apparently, maps. Also, sewing paper is fun!

What you need:

  • And old book (or whatever paper you're going to use). I used this book's cover to make a clock a long time ago.
  • A sewing machine and thread
  • A stencil or cardstock to make a stencil
  • Ribbon or baker's twine to make the pull
  • Candy!

First, make yourself a stencil if you need to. I sized mine so I could put at least three little chocolate hearts in a bag.

Next step: sew two hearts together. Start close to the "v" at the top of the heart and use your reverse stitch setting to secure the starting point. Do the same wherever you stop - then very gently pull the whole thing away from the needle. Even really good paper is not as tough as fabric.

Important: Leave yourself a generously sized space for filling

Pop a few pieces of candy in each heart. Then create little tags and attach them to bakers twine or ribbon. Push the ribbon ends into the heart and sew it closed.

And now you have cute, highly customizable Valentine's Day gifts! Enjoy :)
