January 2014 | the ReFab Diaries

I love vintage leather coats and jackets, but they aren't all wearable. So how do you upcycle a leather jacket that's too wrecked to wear?

When I stumbled upon this fantastic coat refab by Luz (of Luz Patterns) I couldn't wait to share it! Then I had irritating internet issues that shut me down for a bit. But I'm back and here it is. I've seen old leather upcycles before (old round up here) ... but nothing this beautifully crafted. And she shows her makeover in detail.

Thanks to Luz for permission to share!  (PS: She's a crochet, sewing and DIY whiz so enjoy the blog)

What do you have to say and what are you giving away?

I started this blog in 2009 because I kept seeing things online that I wanted to share. And "share" was not such a super easy thing back then.  "Blogging" too was a different thing, in the pre-Pinterest world. I was also not in marketing when I started. That changed. I'm now a full-time, agency writer and have been living and breathing marketing (along with blogging) for several years.

Yes, the blog is a personal thing - a forum for sharing my ideas and those of others. But I've used my blog (and helped others create blogs) specifically to market art, books, crafts and other lovely things. It's this combined career and blogging experience that made me feel ok accepting the above invite from the Berwyn Makers. I've learned a few things. And now I'm thrilled to be able to share what I know and help if I can. Here's a summary of what I covered (and what I learned) at the Berwyn Makers gathering. NOTE: these are my opinions based on personal experience and instinct. Nothing more.

Here's a familiar story: I just happened to be around when my neighbor was throwing out a lamp. Solid wood base. Old electrical cord but in perfect working order. How could I resist? Small issue... no shade. I took my time deciding what would work in the room - I wanted warm light. And I wanted to create something that would work in a vintage / boho-inspired space. Something a bit like this:

Wow. How did it get to be January 8, 2014?? A post from me is WAY overdue ... my apologies. My year got off to a streptococcal kind of start. Horrible. But, here I am and I've got several fun bits and pieces to share with you.
