Meet the world's first slipper that's helping to fight plastic pollution

Fab folk - I'm thrilled to introduce you to Sam Wright and his brainchild, Clearwaters! Clearwaters is a new, environmentally friendly footwear brand designed and developed in the United Kingdom. The brand's first product offering is a minimalist, high-quality slipper made from recycled plastic bottles. For each pair sold, they have committed 2% of the sale price to their partner Plastic Oceans – whether they're profitable or not!

Sam just launched the Clearwaters Kickstarter and I have a pair of these beautiful slippers to give to one of you fab refabbers. Read on to find out more about them and how to win a pair. The giveaway is open worldwide!

I asked Sam, Founder of Clearwaters, what motivated him to launch this business: 

I've been working in the footwear industry for 10 years and became frustrated by the industry's general lack of attention to the impact its having on climate change. I am also a keen advocate of limiting the amount of plastic we use and ensuring that it is, at the very least, recycled correctly. Around 18 months ago I started exploring ways that I could combine these two ideas, and along came Clearwaters! After 12 months in the making, I am now delighted to be launching the brand on Kickstarter.

In addition to upcycling 3-5 plastic bottles, the Clearwaters slipper incorporates a few other sustainable features: a super-soft organic cotton sock, sneaker-like, natural rubber sole and reusable packaging.

The slippers are made using the highest quality organic cotton, making them irresistibly soft and cozy, as well as environmentally friendly! Organic cotton is farmed without the use of pesticides. Growing cotton organically also helps with soil fertility, locking CO2 into the soil rather than pushing it into the atmosphere.

Natural rubber is farmed sustainably with no measurable impact on the environment. Synthetic rubber is made using petrochemicals – a by-product of crude oil refining.
