Looking for creative ways to decorate your home? Something I like to do after a fruitful thrifting trip is take any clothes, curtains, or blankets and transform them into something new. Revive your old fabrics into decor to add a pop of color and texture to your home with these tips.
Turn Fabrics Into Pillow Covers
You can easily repurpose old fabrics, especially vintage ones, into pillow covers. To create your own, cut the fabric into your desired size, sew up three sides, and insert a pillow form or stuffing.
Complete the look by stitching the final side closed or adding a zipper for easy washing. It’s a simple yet stunning way to brighten up your couch or bed!
Make a Patchwork Throw Blanket
Why settle for one type of fabric when you can combine multiple pieces for a unique patchwork throw blanket? Use old shirts, dresses, or even curtains, and sew them together into a cozy quilt. I absolutely love cuddling up in a patchwork blanket while watching movies on my living room sofa, and it adds character to your living spaces.
Create Wall Art
Tired of your dull, white walls? Give life to your empty walls by turning fabric into art. Take a bold or patterned piece, stretch it across a wooden frame, and staple it in place for a tapestry effect.
You can also properly frame your needlepoint fabric by stretching and securing it behind glass in decorative frames. This brings a sense of elegance and sophistication to any room, especially a home office or craft space.
Design Table Runners and Placemats
Dress up your dining area by reusing garments with eye-catching prints or textures. Sew them into table runners or placemats to add an instant flair to your dinnerware. This is one of my favorite ways to revive old fabrics into decor and protect my dining table.
Sew Fabric Baskets
Old fabrics with sturdy material can serve as the perfect material for functional baskets or bins. I stuff mine with crafting supplies, incoming mail, or even potted plants. If you need an extra storage bin for your living spaces, create your own fabric basket!
Customize a Lampshade
Plain lampshades can completely transform with the right fabric. Wrap your chosen design around the shade, secure it with adhesive, and trim the edges for a polished look. When the light shines through, it casts warm tones to create a cozy atmosphere.
Once you create a wonderful masterpiece, showcase it in your home! I love to hang artwork in bedrooms or bathrooms and place standing decorations inside bookshelves or end tables. No matter where you choose to display your new art piece, you and your guests will appreciate the sentimentality of your home decor.
