EDIT 3/6: Winner: Christy P D
If, like me, you're dragging through the final frozen weeks of winter, then this post is a treat for you! A well-timed chance to win some sustainably-made, minimally packaged, totally beautiful beauty products. Ready to spring clean yourself?
Win $45 worth of sustainably-made, minimally-
packaged beauty products
Before I share the details of the giveaway, a little about Maya and Serenade, the company she started. I asked Maya (currently a student at UC Berkeley) what motivated her:"After learning about how our economy really was not designed to be a circular one, and how the effects of climate change would require every single sector to change its ways, I decided that I wanted to reduce my carbon footprint. Trying to move to zero-waste made me realize how expensive some zero-waste products are currently, and that there is no one-stop-shop for minimally packaged or zero-waste health and beauty products. So, I started Serenade to bring affordable beauty and skin care products to more people."

And those products - what's the thinking that goes into them?
"I source my items from a lot of small businesses who are conscious about sustainability and are also trying to provide more eco-friendly alternatives to consumers. Most of our products are completely zero waste. We’re not perfect, but we will continuously improve our product curation and expand as we grow!"
What about packaging?
"We pack shipments with recyclable/and or compostable materials. The mailers and boxes we use are all made from recycled paper and are 100% recyclable and biodegradable. If plastic is found in your package, it was reused! We don't purchase any packing materials containing plastic."
Impressed? Me too.
So let's dive into the set of products that one of you lucky folk will win!

If you can, it's great to switch to shampoo and conditioner bars to save plastic waste and the water used to make the product.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lisa! This small switch can make a huge difference.
DeleteMake your own soap bars is one of my favorite things to help save money. I can control the ingredients and the amount that I create.
ReplyDeleteYes! And it's fun to make too :)
DeleteWhen I order a drink to go while I am out I ask them to keep the straw. I also use the library a lot.
ReplyDeleteI wish more cities would just ban straws - I often forget to ask them in time. And libraries... yes! Especially now that so many (in the US, anyway) have great apps for reading ebooks.
DeleteI make sure to completely use all of the products and I give products I can't use/don't like to friends. I also recycle all of the containers I can.
ReplyDeleteGreat point re. using up products or giving them away!
DeleteTo avoid the waste, don't buy it.
ReplyDeleteThey should have let it be glass soda bottles that gave refunds. They were in paper cartons.
ReplyDeleteWe make our own soap and laundry detergent .
ReplyDeleteLaundry detergent too?! Fantastic.
DeleteIt might seem like a small tip or hack, but instead of simply rinsing out "empty" bottles/containers of bath or shower products (this works for cleaning products, too!) I will rinse them out under the running water of a bath/shower. (Shower gel or body wash will make a nice bubble bath!) This gets all of the remaining product out, while at the same time cleaning the packaging so that it's ready to be recycled.

That's great advice Ann.
DeleteI've heard before that most shampoos & conditioners are stronger than they need to be for your hair. That you should dilute them. This would definitely make them last longer & be less wasteful.
ReplyDeleteInteresting - thanks for the insight Nancy!
DeleteI like using the makeup eraser-they're reusable towels that replace makeup wipes. They really remove makeup too.

Thanks for this - I've seen them advertised, but they looked a little too good to be true!
DeleteI don't have any tips of my own, but I sure am picking up a few reading these other comments!
ReplyDeleteThat's great to hear Melissa. We're drowning in unnecessary, single-use packaging - most of it plastic. And since China stopped taking our recycling (over a year ago), many US cities are having to dump a lot of recyclables. So making small changes makes a difference!
DeleteWe plan to make our own cold process soap and bar shampoo since we've been using handmade soap for years now. Healthier and ecological!
ReplyDeleteFantastic Helga!
Deletewe recycle
ReplyDeleteHooray!
DeleteWe use re-usable water bottles and I crochet produce and grocery bags.
ReplyDeleteI bet those bags are fab!
ReplyDeleteUsing dryer sheets when you run out of dry shampoo!!
ReplyDeleteSmart!
DeleteI use wool dryer balls and make most of my own cleaning products.
ReplyDeleteWool dryer balls are the best :)
ReplyDeleteI do enjoy making my own foaming soap. I reuse the same bottle and this saves money also.

Have switched to a SHAMPOO soap bar. I have to admit not a lot plastic waste now. And my hair loves this shampoo bar
ReplyDeletei MAKE MY OWN SOAP
ReplyDeleteI always use my own shopping bags and consider the item in terms of sustainability before purchasing.
ReplyDeleteDitch your dry shampoo and use corn flour instead.
ReplyDeleteI like to reuse soap.
