Before I share the details of the giveaway, a little about Maya and Serenade, the company she started. I asked Maya (currently a student at UC Berkeley) what motivated her:"After learning about how our economy really was not designed to be a circular one, and how the effects of climate change would require every single sector to change its ways, I decided that I wanted to reduce my carbon footprint. Trying to move to zero-waste made me realize how expensive some zero-waste products are currently, and that there is no one-stop-shop for minimally packaged or zero-waste health and beauty products. So, I started Serenade to bring affordable beauty and skin care products to more people."

And those products - what's the thinking that goes into them?
"I source my items from a lot of small businesses who are conscious about sustainability and are also trying to provide more eco-friendly alternatives to consumers. Most of our products are completely zero waste. We’re not perfect, but we will continuously improve our product curation and expand as we grow!"
What about packaging?
"We pack shipments with recyclable/and or compostable materials. The mailers and boxes we use are all made from recycled paper and are 100% recyclable and biodegradable. If plastic is found in your package, it was reused! We don't purchase any packing materials containing plastic."

DeleteMake your own soap bars is one of my favorite things to help save money. I can control the ingredients and the amount that I create.

DeleteWhen I order a drink to go while I am out I ask them to keep the straw. I also use the library a lot.
ReplyDeleteI wish more cities would just ban straws - I often forget to ask them in time. And libraries... yes! Especially now that so many (in the US, anyway) have great apps for reading ebooks.
DeleteI make sure to completely use all of the products and I give products I can't use/don't like to friends. I also recycle all of the containers I can.

ReplyDeleteThey should have let it be glass soda bottles that gave refunds. They were in paper cartons.

DeleteIt might seem like a small tip or hack, but instead of simply rinsing out "empty" bottles/containers of bath or shower products (this works for cleaning products, too!) I will rinse them out under the running water of a bath/shower. (Shower gel or body wash will make a nice bubble bath!) This gets all of the remaining product out, while at the same time cleaning the packaging so that it's ready to be recycled.

DeleteI've heard before that most shampoos & conditioners are stronger than they need to be for your hair. That you should dilute them. This would definitely make them last longer & be less wasteful.

ReplyDeleteThat's great to hear Melissa. We're drowning in unnecessary, single-use packaging - most of it plastic. And since China stopped taking our recycling (over a year ago), many US cities are having to dump a lot of recyclables. So making small changes makes a difference!
DeleteWe plan to make our own cold process soap and bar shampoo since we've been using handmade soap for years now. Healthier and ecological!
