What You Need To Know To Create Your Own Capsule Wardrobe | the ReFab Diaries

If you want to live more sustainably, I recommend creating a capsule wardrobe. A capsule wardrobe is a small collection of clothing items or accessories that never go out of fashion and play a part in multiple outfits and social situations. When discovering what you need to know to create your own capsule wardrobe, it’s important to remember that the name of the game is quality, not quantity. Here are some of my favorite tips to help you get started.

What You Need To Know To Create Your Own Capsule Wardrobe

Versatile clothing

Considering that the main idea of a capsule wardrobe is to use the same articles of clothing in multiple situations, versatile clothing is a must. Think about items like a white button-up blouse or that comfortable pair of straight jeans you love wearing. These are great examples of versatile clothing. Everyone has their own taste for versatile clothing options, but considering the colors and styles you wear the most is a good starting point.

Cleaning out your current wardrobe

What you need to know about creating your capsule wardrobe is that the entire point is to keep it small. This means before you start, think about clearing out a lot of what you already have. I’m not saying that you have to get rid of every single thing that doesn’t fit into your capsule. You can and should have clothes for special occasions, but I always suggest selling or donating items that you don’t wear or need to narrow things down for your capsule.

Having multiple capsules

While versatility is a critical factor in your capsule wardrobe, that doesn’t mean the entire thing fits one and only one situation. The cute tank tops you wear in the summer aren’t as comfortable in the winter months, and when winter rolls around, I expect that you have some cute scarves you want to wear. When designing a capsule wardrobe, it’s good to swap things out with the seasons. Remember that a big part of versatility is using things that fit your environment.
